Wychwood

Backyard | Front yard

Embracing the idiosyncratic elements of this city garden gave it an authentic sense of place that can otherwise take years to establish. Working with specific perennials that cater to the owner’s busy schedule, the garden took on the character of an old-world courtyard. To give the pre-existing deck a more substantial profile, a pergola was added and painted to match the house’s dark trim. Planters of Miscanthus grass and pots of Amsonia forge a connection between the hardscaping and the green spaces. At the back of the property, mature vines cover the two-story wall that belongs to a neighbouring house, with a shapely pagoda dogwood and eastern redbud tree adding the perfect combination of structure and drama.
