Large City Garden – Front | Side | Back

The redesign of this historic home’s garden considered many established elements, including twin Japanese maples out front and a grand old oak tree in the back. The front yard plan focused on blending old with new. Enhancing the pathways and garden beds to better match the scale of the house introduced a stronger sense of symmetry and a modern formality. For a more architectural look, new steel retaining walls square off the garden beds at the base of the walkway, which is widened by a border of pea gravel and a mass planting of Japanese spurge. Serviceberry trees frame the front door. Lighting the path is particularly elegant at night. At the side of the house, a previously unused and unfinished area is now fenced in and landscaped with a pathway that leads to the private back garden. Here, the oak tree acts as a focal point for the dining and lounging areas. A pergola and built-in planter walls with boxwood hedges help define spaces within the space, allowing the garden to feel both intimate and grand.
