Small Urban Backyard
Measuring only 13 feet wide by 25 feet deep, this petit backyard in a historic Toronto neighbourhood feels like a secret garden. A series of outdoor rooms unfold along the ash walkway, each offering a distinct mood. The owners are avid entertainers and cooks, so the dining area, tiled in limestone, can seat a crowd along the built-in bench. A nine-by-four foot inset planted with a serviceberry tree, Vision in Pink astilbe, Euphorbia and ferns introduces a secluded woodland feel and gives the far end of the garden an increased sense of privacy. A quiet backdrop of climbing vines and pink flowering dogwood trees bring added dimension.
