Small Urban Backyard

California and Canada meet in this urban backyard oasis, which serves as both an entertaining hub and a personal retreat. Inspired by the famous boardwalk in L.A.’s sun-soaked Venice Beach area, the garden features a raised natural wood deck and pergola. Sand-coloured pea gravel covers the ground along with hostas and a massing of ornamental Hakone grass, while a row of multi-stemmed birch trees add northern spirit and sun-dappled shade. Large corten steel planters add a sculptural accent and a sense of privacy, with Northwind grasses that sway in the breeze like dune grass. Beyond the deck, a steel fire pit and woven lounge chairs offer a casual gathering spot.
